AN OBJECTIVE INDEX FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF THE CONTAMINATION OF SURFACE AND GROUND WATERS BY ACID MINE DRAINAGE

The latest publication in the reprint series of Water Technology Research Technical Report s is No. 22.  AN OBJECTIVE INDEX FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF THE CONTAMINATION OF SURFACE AND GROUND WATERS BY ACID MINE DRAINAGE
Temporal and spatial comparisons of acid mine drainage (AMD) contaminated waters are difficult due to the complex physico-chemical nature of the pollutant. An objective index has been developed and evaluated for assessment of such waters. The acid mine drainage index (AMDI) is calculated using a modified arithmetic weighted index using seven parameters most indicative of AMD contamination. These are pH sulphate, iron, zinc, aluminium copper and cadmium. Weighting was used to express the relative indicator value of each parameter. The pH and sulphate were considered to be of greatest indicator value as they were unaffected by sorption processes, while sulphate was also unaffected by natural neutralization processes. The AMDI as proposed is designed to detect and quantify contamination from AMD and to help categorize samples, quantify impact to receiving waters and to monitor recovery. The AMDI is fully evaluated and discussed.

Tigroney Press publishes the catalogue of Feast, the solo exhibition of paintings by the Irish-based artist Lucy Doyle

Tigroney Press is delighted to publish on free access via edpositIreland the catalogue of the solo exhibition of paintings by the Irish-based artist Lucy Doyle shown at the Doorway Gallery in Dublin during May 2017. Called ‘Feast’ the collection of paintings were inspired by her daughter’s wedding. She writes: ‘I started work on this exhibition in autumn 2015, directly after my daughter’s wedding, which we celebrated at home, which took up months of preparation, working on the garden etc. From out of all the excitement and celebrations, ideas for paintings began to take shape. Flower girls, gardenscapes, food-laden tables, and flower arrangements became a rich source of inspiration for the work I was planning to do for my next show. And so ‘Feast’ emerged. ‘ Since graduating from Art College in 1982 Lucy Doyle has held a solo show every 1 - 2 years. Over these past 30 or more years, she has developed her own very unique and personal style, which is about colour and textures. Her compositions are constructed within a shallow space, in which she challenges the conventions of perspective, in order to celebrate the surface decorative qualities and two dimensionality of the canvas. She writes: ‘I like to keep an open and relaxed mind when it comes to my subject matter. This enables me to be very eclectic, sourcing ideas from the place and people around me, or from books, films, paintings, from art history or simply a feeling, a whim, nostalgia or even a mood. When it comes to composing and constructing a painting from an idea, I like to incorporate an element of experimentation. I achieve this by trying out new ways to apply the paint. In Feast I have explored different coloured grounds within one composition, from terre verte to cadmium red, as well as my old favourite rose and ochre hues, hopefully finding different ways to represent my idea of space and form. By pushing the boundaries and limits of my style as far as I can go, I attempt to keep my work as alive, vital and as fresh as possible. When it comes to the act of painting itself, and when I finally get out the paints and start laying out the composition, I very quickly let the interplay of colour and textures that are created in the moment take president. Whatever it takes to produce a balanced harmonious painting, where the colours remain vibrant and stand alone, is in essence what I am all about. At this stage, previous plans of content and narrative might be shelved or compromised to the betterment of the whole. I work in impasto using a palette knife which keeps me in touch with the pure physicality of the paint in all its tactile, colour- infused buttery beauty.’  http://hdl.handle.net/2262/80364

The Timekeepers: A new science crime thriller based on the vulnerability of time.

Manson was the opposite of McGeever in every way.  McGeever really did look like James Bond being tall, good looking and athletic.  But in reality it was Manson who had field experience while McGeever was essentially a desk man.  Manson had worked undercover in South America for over nine years brushing up against some of the most dangerous drug cartels in the world who included people who were renowned for their violence and cruelty.  Under the guise of a coffee exporter Manson had made his way all over the remotest parts of Columbia, his white linen suit stained and showing signs of wear, and sweat marks under the armpits.  In fact Manson believed that he never once stopped sweating during his long tours of duty in that tragic country.  Unlike McGeever, Manson had killed, several times in self-defence, and frequently over-stepped the mark while trying to get information.  Oh yes, Manson was undoubtedly a good agent, and once he had the scent of his quarry, then nothing would stand in his way.  Yet in appearance Manson was joke.  A short man, with a square bulging torso, a face like a boxer, thinning hair and a simpleton expression.  You wouldn’t give him a second glance unless you were a hot dog trader.

Coming in June The Timekeepers by Nick Gray and published by Tigroney Press. A science thriller based on the vulnerability of time.

Water Technology Research Technical report 19 Reissued by Tigroney Press

As part of an extensive study of the environmental impacts of the abandoned CU-S mines at Avoca in County Wicklow in Ireland, extensive studies were made of the river sediments and their toxicity. Originally written in 1995, this report examines the background to this study by reviewing the interactions of metals with the sediments including speciation, sorption processes (i.e. Interaction with particulate matter the role of hydrous oxides), as well as the sediment itself (i.e. sediment composition, grain size effects, transport and pollutant pathways). The toxicity of sediment-bound metals to aquatic organisms is also explored. The study explores the effects of acid mine drainage on the River Avoca.

Tigroney Short Guides: UNDER PRESSURE: A MAN'S GUIDE TO PRESSURE COOKING

Thought to have been invented in 1679 by Denis Papin, a physicist, the pressure cooker has gone through a steady evolution from mini submarine to the modern present day iconic cooking vessel.  Hated by many, loved by others, the pressure cooker can reduce cooking times by up to 90% in some cases by cooking food at increased temperatures by raising the pressure.

Although often seen as something Grandma struggled with, resulting in rapid evacuations from the kitchen or explosions of red hot stew hitting the ceiling; the pressure cooker offers a uniquely rapid, sustainable and extremely healthy way to cook.  Every boy now aged over forty had or wanted a steam engine.  Mesmerized by the hiss of the boiler, steam gushing from joints, it is a dream that lives on for many.  So ladies, if you want to get your husband into the kitchen … get him a pressure cooker and stand back.  From pulses to soups he will quickly become obsessed releasing not only steam but the inner cook and the love of food that is in everyone.

Under Pressure: A Man's Guide to Pressure Cooking  published by Tigroney Press in their Short Guide Series is a quick starter guide for those who are new to pressure cooking and who may still have nightmares about Grandma in the kitchen.  This is not a tradtional cookbook but a instructions manual for the most inexperienced cook. Due to be released in September 2017. For further information contact tigroneypress@gmail.com
